Bhubaneswar gallery hosts an inspiring blend of terracotta masterworks
Bhubaneswar art lovers are currently enjoying a remarkable fusion of ancient clay traditions and modern sculptural techniques. National Lalit Kala Akademi Regional Centre in Kharavel Nagar recently launched "The Clay Continuum" exhibition. This unique event brings together the vibrant terracotta heritage of Odisha with fresh, contemporary visions. Padma Shri awardee Binod Maharana opened the event as the chief guest. He shared an inspiring message with the gathering. Real progress in the creative field happens only when modern pieces draw direct inspiration from traditional Odia roots, he stated. His words set a meaningful tone for the entire cultural gathering. Historically, Odisha has maintained a deeply rooted connection to clay crafts, with rural artisans passing down intricate firing and shaping techniques over centuries.
Eminent Guests Gather
Several respected figures attended the special opening ceremony. Craft Council Chairman Santosh Kumar Mahapatra and Handicrafts Department Assistant Director Bhuwan Bhaskar joined the celebration. Other notable guests included Devabrat Nayak from Lalit Kala Akademi, senior artist Ramahari Jena, and Dhauli College of Art and Crafts Principal Dr. Panchanan Samal. BJP women leader Sasmita Samanta also participated to help highlight regional art forms.
Showcasing Master Sculptors
Eight distinguished artists are currently displaying their magnificent terracotta creations in the gallery. Visitors can explore detailed works by Ban Rana, Jayadeb Rana, Mukunda Rana, Narottam Das, Sanjaya Muduli, Saroj Kumar Raut, Sudhi Ranjan Maharatha, and Sukant Muduli.
Curator Sarbeshwar Biswal explained the main goal of the gallery event. He wanted to provide a shared space where audiences could view traditional terracotta makers and modern sculptors side by side. Visitors have responded with great enthusiasm, finding themselves completely captivated by the creative designs. Art enthusiasts can explore these beautiful clay creations daily from 11 am to 7 pm until September 8.
