Indian banks face unprecedented risks from advanced AI capabilities.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired a high-level meeting in New Delhi to address emerging threats from an unreleased Artificial Intelligence model called Claude Mythos. This advanced system, developed by the research firm Anthropic, possesses a startling ability to identify and exploit software vulnerabilities at a speed that far exceeds human capacity. During the session, which included top officials from the Reserve Bank of India and major public sector banks, the Minister stressed that the financial sector must prepare for a new era of "AI-born" risks.

Nature of the Mythos Threat

Claude Mythos is not a typical generative AI tool but a specialized cybersecurity model. Internal evaluations suggest it can uncover "zero-day" vulnerabilities - flaws unknown even to the software developers - within hours. It has already identified thousands of security gaps in major operating systems, including bugs that have remained hidden for nearly thirty years. While Anthropic has restricted access to a small group of global tech giants to help patch these holes, Indian regulators fear that similar technology in the hands of malicious actors could devastate digital infrastructure.

Strategic Response and Oversight

Finance Ministry officials directed the Indian Banks' Association to establish a real-time threat intelligence sharing mechanism. This framework will work in tandem with CERT-In to ensure that any detected vulnerability is neutralized before it can be exploited. India is also reportedly engaging with international partners, including the United States, to seek early access to such defensive tools.

Digital Public Infrastructure Resilience

Odisha’s growing fintech ecosystem and the wider Indian digital backbone, including the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), rely heavily on interconnected software layers. Experts suggest that the primary danger lies in legacy code - older software sections still running beneath modern banking apps - which Mythos can penetrate with ease. To counter this, a special committee led by SBI Chairman C S Setty is now tasked with studying these AI-driven risks and recommending necessary technology investments for public sector banks.
