Devotees prepare for fasting as crescent moon observation begins tonight

Anticipation Peaks as India Awaits Ramadan Moon Sighting Tonight

Spiritual excitement has reached a fever pitch across the country as the Muslim community prepares to welcome the holy month. With Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations already observing their first day of fasting today, all eyes in India are now turned toward the evening sky. The start of Ramadan 2026 in India hinges entirely on the sighting of the crescent moon, known as the Hilal, scheduled for observation tonight, Wednesday, February 18.

Saudi Arabia Confirms, India Follows Suit

Religious authorities in Saudi Arabia officially confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon on Tuesday evening. Consequently, the month of Shaban ended, and the holy period began in the region. Following this development, believers in India are hopeful that the moon will be visible tonight. If the crescent is sighted this evening, the first Roza (fast) will be observed tomorrow, Thursday, February 19.

However, if weather conditions or cloud cover obscure the moon, the current Islamic month will complete a 30-day cycle. in that scenario, the fasting period would commence on Friday, February 20. Historically, India tends to start the holy month one day after Saudi Arabia, making a Thursday start highly probable.

Preparations for Chand Raat and First Roza

Markets are buzzing with activity as families prepare for Chand Raat, the eve of the holy month. From purchasing dates and fruits to finalizing arrangements for late-night prayers, the atmosphere is festive. Households are also organizing schedules for Sehri (pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (breaking of the fast).

Since timings for these rituals depend strictly on local sunrise and sunset, devotees in Odisha and other states are advised to consult their local mosques or updated digital calendars. For those in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, specific charts will be available at local religious centers.

A Month of Reflection

This sacred period is not just about abstaining from food and water; it is a time for deep spiritual reflection, charity, and community bonding. As the sun sets tonight, millions will be waiting for the announcement from moon-sighting committees to officially embrace the blessings of the month.
