New Delhi, June 1: The Central Government has cleared the appointment of four High Court Chief Justices and Senior Advocate V Mohana as judges of the Supreme Court.
The development was shared on X by Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal this morning.
The appointments come days after the Union Cabinet approved enhancement of the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court from 34 to 38 followed by an ordinance to this effect. With the five new appointments, 37 positions in the apex court now stand filled.
Along with Senior Advocate V Mohana, the new appointees are Justice Sheel Nagu (Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court), Justice Shree Chandrashekhar (Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court), Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva (Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court), and Justice Arun Palli (Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh).
Last week, Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant recommended the elevation of the new appointees to the top court.
“Vide Notifications of even number dated 01.06.2026, in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the Hon’ble President of India is pleased to appoint (i) Shri Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice, High Court of Punjab and Haryana, (ii) Shri Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice, High Court of Bombay, (iii) Shri Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice, High Court of Madhya Pradesh, (iv) Shri Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and (v) Smt. Venkita Subramani Mohana, Senior advocate, to be Judges of the Supreme Court of India with effect from the date they assume charge of their office,” said a Ministry of Law & Justice statement.
