New Delhi, Jan 09: The Centre has appointed Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new Revenue Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, a position he will hold alongside his current designation as Finance Secretary, as per a notification from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Prior to this appointment, Pandey served as the Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) and the Department of Public Enterprises. He succeeds Arunish Chawla, who was appointed Revenue Secretary following Sanjay Malhotra's appointment as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Chawla has now been appointed as the new Secretary of DIPAM.
Pandey, a 1987-batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre, has had a long career in various government roles. He holds a master's degree in Economics from Punjab University and an MBA from the UK. His career has included leadership positions in both state and central government agencies, as well as international exposure with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
In 2019, Pandey was appointed Secretary of DIPAM in the Ministry of Finance, and in September of the previous year, he was appointed Finance Secretary. The Department of Revenue, which he will now oversee, is responsible for the collection of both direct and indirect taxes. It manages this through two key statutory boards: the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), which handles direct taxes such as income tax, and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), which is responsible for indirect taxes like GST and customs duties.
