New Delhi, Jul 22: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a directive requiring all affiliated schools to install “Oil Boards”—large posters or digital displays that showcase the fat content in commonly consumed foods such as samosas, kachoris, and French fries. These boards are to be prominently placed in cafeterias, hallways, and staff areas to raise awareness about unhealthy eating.

This new initiative follows last year’s “Sugar Boards” campaign, and is part of CBSE’s broader effort to combat rising obesity rates among students and staff.
In a circular dated July 15, CBSE Director (Academics) Dr. Praggya M. Singh highlighted alarming statistics from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019–21), which revealed that more than one in five urban adults in India is overweight or obese. Projections indicate that India could have nearly 450 million obese adults by 2050.
The CBSE has also encouraged schools to involve students in designing the Oil Boards, include health messages on school stationery, and actively promote nutritious food choices and regular physical activity. The overarching aim is to instill healthy eating habits by providing constant visual reminders in the school environment.
