Bhubaneswar, May 11: Cash to the tune of Rs 6.87 crore has been seized in poll-bound Odisha by May 6. However, the agencies have failed to find out the source of the illegal money.
Odisha Police, Income Tax department, Excise department. DIR and GST officials have intensified checking and raids across the state following the Election Commission of India's direction.
A total of Rs 6.87 crore has been seized between March 1 and May 6 in Odisha. While Rs 2 crore has been returned following submission of required documents, over Rs 4 crore has been kept in government offices.
The IT department has seized Rs 26 lakh of a businessman from Paradip from Bhubaneswar Airport. The businessman has failed to provide any document for the purpose he was carrying such a huge amount of cash with him.
The IT department seized over Rs 4.5 crore from Bhubaneswar-based Jain Media house, engaged in flex printing. Its owner Ranjit Jain is unable say about source of the seized money.
Sonepur police had seized Rs 55 lakh on April 7 and handed over the money to IT department as failed to identify its owner.
