Bhubaneswar, Aug 31: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Saturday demanded the resignation of Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan over the deaths of three persons in the Chikiti liquor tragedy.

Raising the issue during zero hour, BJD Chief Whip in Odisha Assembly Pramila Mallik also demanded a statement from the Excise Minister on steps being taken to check the illegal liquor trade.

The BJD leader said the death toll in the liquor trade rose to three on Saturday with the death of one more person undergoing treatment in the hospital.

She said four other people are still undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Mallik said the Excise minister should resign from his post as the BJP came to power by promising to make Odisha a liquor-free state.
