Bhubaneswar, Jul 15: In response to the confirmed bird flu outbreak in Puri district, the State Public Health Department has launched emergency health measures to ensure public safety and monitor the containment efforts.
Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, the State Public Health Director, addressed the media on Monday, stating, “Upon confirmation of the bird flu outbreak, we promptly alerted our health teams and deployed personnel to the affected region. In line with standard protocol, we are working closely with the Veterinary Department, which is responsible for managing avian influenza cases, including the culling of infected birds.”
The outbreak was first reported at a poultry farm in Bada Ankula village, located in Delanga block of Puri district, where over 6,700 birds have been culled after tests confirmed the presence of the H5N1 avian influenza virus.
“Our primary focus is to ensure the safety and health of those involved in the culling process—farm workers, farm owners, and veterinary staff. We have administered preventive doses and provided necessary medicines. The Veterinary Department has equipped the team with PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) kits and masks, which are being used on-site,” Dr. Mishra explained.
Medical teams are closely monitoring the health of all personnel involved, and any required treatments will be provided.
Dr. Mishra reassured the public, saying, “At present, the outbreak is contained within Puri district. We are maintaining strict vigilance and adhering to all containment protocols.”
An additional review team has been dispatched to assess the situation on the ground, and the district health team continues to submit daily reports twice a day. The government has promised to keep the public updated on developments and assured that all necessary steps are being taken to prevent any further spread of the virus.
