Star batter Jemimah Rodrigues takes charge of Delhi Capitals.

Delhi Capitals have officially entered a new era by appointing Indian batting sensation Jemimah Rodrigues WPL 2026 Captain. This significant leadership change follows the departure of legendary Australian cricketer Meg Lanning, who guided the franchise through the first three seasons of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). With Lanning moving to UP Warriorz for a staggering Rs 1.90 crore, the Capitals have turned to a homegrown hero to lead their charge for a maiden title.

The decision reflects the franchise's strategic shift toward Indian leadership. While the squad boasts international powerhouses like Laura Wolvaardt, the team management, led by co-owner Parth Jindal, prioritized an Indian face for the top job. Jemimah has been a cornerstone of the Capitals since the league's inception, and her recent explosive form on the world stage made her the natural successor.

A Historic Year for Jemimah

The promotion comes on the heels of a career-defining performance at the Women’s World Cup. Despite a shaky start to that tournament, Jemimah emerged as India's most reliable batter, finishing with 292 runs at an average of 58.40. Her masterclass innings of 127 in the semi-final against Australia not only ended their long winning streak but cemented her reputation as a big-match player.

Emotional Homecoming

Expressing her gratitude, Jemimah described the appointment as an "absolute honour." She noted that the Capitals have felt like family since day one. Having amassed 507 runs in 27 matches with a strike rate of 139.66, she is already one of the most impactful players in the league. Her goal is now clear: to finally cross the finish line that has eluded the team for three consecutive seasons.

Looking Ahead to WPL 2026

The Delhi Capitals WPL squad is a blend of experienced veterans and fresh talent, including Shafali Verma and Marizanne Kapp. Fans won’t have to wait long to see the new captain in action. The Capitals are set to kick off their campaign on January 10 in a high-stakes encounter against the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians at the Dr DY Patil Stadium.
