Bhubaneswar: BMC closes ‘gupchup’ stalls near OUAT till November 17 following jaundice outbreak

Bhubaneswar, Nov 15: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has closed several roadside eateries, near Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) following jaundice outbreak in some hostels on the campus.
A raid was conducted on the stretch between Siripur and Gopabandhu squares on Wednesday after reports of an outbreak of jaundice in some hotels of OUAT. The stalls, especially the ones selling ‘gupchup’, have been shut down till Sunday as a precautionary measure, said City food safety officer Satyajit Patel.
The BMC food safety team has collected food and water samples from the stalls near Siripur for tests and a team is closely monitoring the situation. Food safety officials and urban surveillance unit have been asked to continue raids on roadside eateries regularly to ensure that hygiene is maintained, said a senior official.
Notably, over 12 students have reportedly been infected by jaundice. Initial investigations blaim contaminated water for the outbreak.
Water samples from all six bore wells on the university campus have been collected and sent for laboratory testing to identify any harmful bacteria or contaminants.
