Kolkata, July 8: One of the key suspects in the Baruipur rape & murder case was killed in a police encounter late night on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as, Pravash Mondal. Mondal was taken to the crime spot for the reconstruction of the crime while he tried to snatch a firearm from the police and flee. Police with no other option opened fire to catch hold of him. However, he later succumbed to the injuries.
Meanwhile, the mother of the deceased accused, Prabhas Mondal, refused to claim his body, saying her son had committed a "terrible crime" and deserved punishment."He committed terrible crime": Mother of Baruipur rape-murder accused killed in police encounter refuses to claim his body. Mondal was among the three suspects arrested after the girl's body was found stuffed in a sack from a pond in Baruipur.

Two other accused persons have been identified as Ananda Sardar and Dibakar Sardar. According to the police, they were also involved in the lynching of an innocent man, Indrajit Mondal, who was beaten to death on suspicion of being involved in the rape and murder case.
Separately, the case has also reached the political arena. The Calcutta High Court allowed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjeeto hold a rally on July 8 in connection with the Baruipur rape and murder case after hearing petitions related to the event.
