Spurious cough syrups, arms seized in Odisha's Bargarh; 15 arrested in major crackdown

Bargarh, Oct 7: In a major crackdown on rising criminal activities and drug smuggling, Bargarh Police conducted simultaneous raids across several locations in the district on Monday, resulting in significant seizures and multiple arrests.

During the operation, law enforcement seized 1,500 bottles of cough syrup, five country-made firearms, 20 live bullets, three unexploded cartridges, 16 mobile phones, five four-wheeler vehicles, and ₹57,200 in cash. A total of 15 individuals were arrested in connection with the illegal activities.

According to police, the arrested suspects include three from Chhattisgarh, eight from Bargarh district, and one each from Cuttack, Balangir, Bhadrak, and Jagatsinghpur. Authorities believe the group was part of a network involved in smuggling cough syrup both within Odisha and into neighboring Chhattisgarh.

Bargarh Superintendent of Police, Prahallad Sahai Meena, addressed the media and confirmed that the raids were part of a special operation aimed at dismantling networks engaged in the illegal drug trade and the possession of arms.

"The police have ramped up surveillance and operations to control criminal activities in the district. Investigations are ongoing, and similar raids will continue in the coming days," SP Meena stated.

The seizures and arrests mark a significant step forward in Bargarh Police's efforts to combat cross-border smuggling and illegal trade in the western region of Odisha.
