Bargarh, Oct 29: The selection process for the role of Kans Maharaj in the 79th edition of the world-famous Bargarh Dhanu Yatra has gained momentum, with the authorities deciding to issue an official notification on November 1. Interested artists can submit their applications until November 15, while the final selection is scheduled to take place in the last week of November.
In a significant decision, the authorities have also removed the age restrictions for artists aspiring to portray Kans Maharaj. Artists above the age of 60 will now be eligible to apply, provided they submit a medical fitness certificate along with their application.
The decisions were taken at an emergency meeting of the Artists’ Advisory Committee held on Wednesday in the conference hall of the Bargarh District Collector’s office. The meeting was chaired by Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Mahendra Mahapatra, with discussions focusing on the selection of a new actor for the iconic role.
Speaking after the meeting, Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Samiti secretary Sureswar Satapathy said the notification would be published on November 1, and applications would be accepted until November 15. The selection process would be completed during the final week of November.
According to the committee’s decision, the selected artist will portray Kans Maharaj for a two-year term. The removal of the age limit is expected to allow a wider pool of performers to compete for the prestigious role.
The selection assumes particular significance following the recent announcement by renowned actor Sushil Meher, who has decided to take a one-year break from portraying Kans Maharaj in the annual open-air theatrical extravaganza.
In a letter submitted to Bargarh Collector and Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Samiti president Aditya Goyal, Meher stated that the circumstances arising from his performances and various controversies in recent days had adversely affected his mental health.
Citing continued mental stress and emotional instability, the actor expressed his inability to portray the character of Kans Maharaj during the current year’s Dhanu Yatra.
His decision has prompted the organisers to initiate the process of selecting a new actor for one of the festival’s most prominent and celebrated roles.
