New Delhi, May 10: Former Chief Justice of India B. R. Gavai emphasized the interdependent relationship between the Bar and the Bench, describing them as “two wheels of the golden chariot” on which the State’s accountability rests. He noted that if either falters, the entire system risks losing balance.
Addressing the 52nd Annual Convocation of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka on Sunday, Justice Gavai highlighted that an independent judiciary cannot function in isolation.
He stressed that the Bar and the Bench collectively uphold the principles and promise of constitutional democracy.
“The Bar and the Bench are not separate or competing entities in a constitutional democracy. They are complementary. As I have often said in India, they are the two wheels of the golden chariot sustaining the accountability of the State. Should one falter, the entire structure begins to lose balance,” he remarked.
