India defeats Wales 4–1 to enter the hockey semi-finals

Indian hockey fans witnessed a masterclass in Hyderabad as the national women’s side dismantled Wales with a clinical 4–1 scoreline. Navneet Kaur stole the spotlight by netting three goals, ensuring the hosts finished at the summit of Pool B during the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026. This victory maintains India's unbeaten momentum heading into the crucial knockout stages.

Early Lead and Constant Pressure

Action began early at the G. M. C. Balayogi Hockey Ground when Sakshi Rana found the back of the net in the seventh minute. A brilliant setup by Salima Tete allowed Rana to strike a powerful reverse hit, catching the Welsh defense off guard. Even though Wales attempted a high press, the speed of the Indian attackers frequently broke through their lines, creating multiple scoring opportunities in the opening quarter.

Navneet Kaur Doubles the Advantage

Dominance continued into the second period with India maintaining over 55% of the ball possession. While the Welsh goalkeeper, Ffion Horrell, managed to thwart a few close-range efforts, she couldn't stop Navneet Kaur in the 29th minute. During a well-executed penalty corner, Navneet sent a low, precise shot into the goal. This gave the home side a comfortable two-goal cushion going into the halftime break.

Securing the Semi-Final Spot

Momentum stayed with the hosts after the restart. Navneet scored her second goal of the evening in the 34th minute after Sakshi Rana earned another penalty corner. Although Wales managed to pull one goal back through Betsan Thomas in the 39th minute, their hopes of a comeback faded when Captain Elizabeth Bingham missed a crucial penalty stroke. Navneet Kaur eventually put the game to rest by completing her hat-trick with a successful penalty stroke in the 55th minute. Finishers of the group stage as table-toppers, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team is now preparing for a high-stakes semi-final clash. They are scheduled to face Italy on March 13. A win in that match will officially confirm their qualification for the upcoming World Cup final.
