Bangladesh on High Alert Ahead of Awami League’s Founding Anniversary

Dhaka, June 22: Bangladesh has intensified security measures across the country ahead of the founding anniversary of the banned Awami League on June 23, amid concerns that supporters of the party could attempt to organise rallies and other activities despite restrictions remaining in place.

Although a new government has assumed office following the end of the interim administration, the prohibition on the political activities of the party led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, along with its affiliated organisations, continues to be enforced. Authorities have adopted a cautious stance, fearing possible attempts by party workers to hold demonstrations or public gatherings.

According to local media reports, the Ministry of Home Affairs has formally requested the deployment of army personnel in several key regions to support law enforcement agencies in maintaining order during the sensitive period.

A letter issued by the ministry’s Political Branch-2 was sent to the Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division on Monday, seeking military assistance ahead of the anniversary celebrations. The communication cited concerns over activities by banned organisations, including unauthorised processions and public showdowns in different parts of the country.

Officials warned that such activities could trigger unrest, disrupt public order, and lead to significant damage to life and property. As a preventive measure, the ministry requested adequate troop deployment for nine days in Dhaka, Chattogram and Gazipur metropolitan areas, as well as the districts of Narayanganj, Gopalganj and Faridpur.

The deployment is scheduled to remain in effect from June 22 to June 30 under the “In Aid to Civil Power” framework, aimed at supporting civilian authorities in maintaining security.

Sources within the Home Ministry indicated that with the Awami League’s founding anniversary being observed on June 23, there are concerns that party leaders and activists may attempt to organise processions, demonstrations and other programmes despite the ban. In recent weeks, supporters of the party and its affiliated bodies have reportedly carried out several flash protests.

The Awami League government was ousted on August 5, 2024, following the July mass uprising. Subsequently, on May 10, 2025, the interim administration led by Professor Muhammad Yunus announced a ban on all activities of the Awami League until legal proceedings against the party and its leaders before the International Crimes Tribunal are completed.

The following day, the government amended the Anti-Terrorism Act to provide a legal framework for enforcing the ban. Later, the National Parliament approved the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance on April 8, retaining provisions that prohibit organisations linked to terrorist activities, thereby keeping restrictions on the Awami League in force.

Government officials have reiterated that authorities remain highly vigilant and are determined to prevent any prohibited political activities. The decision to deploy the army, they said, is part of broader efforts to ensure stability and public safety.

Meanwhile, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has unveiled an extensive security plan for the capital. More than 200 special checkpoints will be set up at strategic locations, while surveillance and security operations will be strengthened at all entry points to the city to prevent any potential disturbances.

In addition to regular police forces, specialised DMP units will be deployed across the capital. More than 18,000 police officers and personnel are expected to be on duty to maintain law and order during the anniversary period.
