Guwahati, May 16: In the aftermath of the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls in Assam, the state unit of the Congress party exudes confidence in securing victory in at least five constituencies. This assertion follows a thorough post-poll internal review encompassing inputs from district and block committees, instilling optimism within the party ranks regarding their electoral performance.
Conversely, BJP leaders remain steadfast in their assertion of clinching victory in a substantial 12 out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam. Despite the BJP's claims, Congress leaders maintain hope in securing wins in the Nagaon, Karimganj, Dhubri, Guwahati, and Jorhat Lok Sabha constituencies.
The state unit has submitted its comprehensive report to the party high command post the completion of the third phase of elections. Facing the challenge of reinvigorating itself after the departure of several MLAs and leaders to the BJP, the Congress embarked on its Lok Sabha journey from scratch.
Should the Congress succeed in securing victory in five seats, overcoming the formidable BJP, it would breathe new life into the "dying" opposition party ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam.
According to a senior Congress leader, victory in Nagaon, Karimganj, and Dhubri is anticipated to be relatively straightforward. Furthermore, a significant difference in votes in Dhubri is anticipated, while Congress candidates in Guwahati and Jorhat foresee winning by substantial margins, possibly in the hundreds of thousands.
After meticulous deliberation through three rounds of meetings and reports from district and block committees, the Congress' optimism regarding the possibility of victory in five seats has solidified.
However, logistical constraints, including the absence of some Congress leaders campaigning outside the state, hindered the convening of a formal review meeting by the state unit. Nevertheless, the Congress Political Affairs Committee is slated to convene in the coming days.
Assam state Congress President Bhupen Borah has confidently asserted, "Congress will anyway win in five Lok Sabha seats in the state," conveying this sentiment to the Congress High Command in Delhi.
In contrast, the BJP dismisses the Congress' claims, with Assam minister Jayanta Mallabaruah asserting, "We are set to win at least 12 out of the total 14 Lok Sabha seats, and the figure may go up to 13 as well."
