Truth Social post confirms Canada excluded from peace initiative

Diplomatic friction between North American neighbours reached a boiling point on Friday as US President Donald Trump officially rescinded Canada’s invitation to join the newly established "Board of Peace." The decision, announced via a blunt message on Truth Social, follows a heated exchange of words between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

Trump’s post was direct and unyielding. Addressing the Canadian leader, he wrote, "Dear Prime Minister Carney: Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada's joining." He further emphasized the exclusivity of the group, describing it as the "most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled."

This sudden exclusion comes just a day after President Trump signed the charter to launch the initiative in Switzerland. The Trump Board of Peace is being positioned by the US administration as a modern alternative to existing international bodies, with Trump even suggesting it could assume roles currently held by the United Nations. Originally proposed to address the conflict in Gaza, the scope has widened to mediate global disputes, including the war in Ukraine.

Tensions flared earlier in the week during the WEF summit. Prime Minister Carney had delivered a speech warning against the "weaponisation" of trade and finance, a comment widely interpreted as a criticism of Washington's recent maneuvers regarding Greenland. Carney spoke of a "rupture" in the global order and the need to protect sovereignty against coercion.

President Trump did not take these remarks lightly. He publicly slammed the Canadian leader, asserting that Canada benefits significantly from US protection without showing enough appreciation. "Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark," Trump said during his address. He also noted that Canada receives "a lot of freebies" and that his proposed "Golden Dome" missile defense system would be the only thing keeping the northern neighbour safe.

While administration officials indicated that around 35 nations have already committed to the board, Canada will no longer be among the 60 nations originally invited. Trump remains optimistic about his initiative, claiming that threats worldwide are "calming down" and that his administration is actively settling multiple wars.
