NSA Doval in Moscow for Key Talks Amid US Tensions
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is in Moscow for high-level talks that have taken on new urgency following the United States' decision to impose steep tariffs on India. While the visit was pre-planned to discuss key defence issues, the recent US action is now expected to dominate the agenda, particularly concerning the supply of Russian oil.
US Tariffs and Energy Security in Focus
The primary focus of the discussions has shifted to finding ways to navigate the new US tariffs. President Trump recently doubled the tariff on Indian goods to 50% as a penalty for India's continued oil trade with Russia. As a result, Doval's talks with his Russian counterpart will explore mechanisms to ensure the continued supply of Russian oil, which is critical for India's energy security. This has become a top priority as India seeks to protect its national interests in the face of US pressure.
Deepening Defence Ties
Alongside the tariff issue, the visit will also advance India's long-standing defence partnership with Russia. The agenda includes discussions on the potential purchase of additional S-400 missile defence systems, which have proven to be highly effective. The talks may also cover the possibility of setting up maintenance and repair facilities for the S-400s in India and exploring the acquisition of Russia's advanced Su-57 fighter jets.
This visit is also seen as a preparatory step for Russian President Vladimir Putin's planned trip to New Delhi later this year. In a complex geopolitical environment, Doval's discussions in Moscow are crucial for reinforcing a key strategic partnership and charting a path forward amid escalating international pressures.
