Bhubaneswar, April 6:   In Ranapur, the denial of a BJP ticket to former Minister and ex-MLA Surama Padhy has ignited demonstrations among her supporters.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) high command has chosen Tapas Martha as the party nominee for the Ranapur assembly constituency of Nayagarh district.

In response, Surama Padhy’s followers have recently staged protests, demanding that she be granted the party ticket for the Ranapur assembly seat in the upcoming election.

They alleged that the denial of the ticket to Surama Padhy was a part of a conspiracy involving Sambit Patra, the BJP candidate from the Puri Lok Sabha constituency. They consider Sambit Patra to be the main conspirator in this episode and have even threatened to prevent him from visiting Ranapur during the election campaign. Their slogan: “Go back, Sambit Patra!”

Approximately 700 BJP party leaders and workers, primarily Surama’s supporters from the seven Zilla Parishad zones of the Ranapur assembly segment, recently gathered and agitated at Chandanpur. During the meeting, chaired by Rabindra Nath Samant, they demanded that the party withdraw the ticket from Martha and instead grant it to Surama  for the Ranapur assembly seat. Their resolution stands firm: Sambit Patra will not be allowed in the Ranapur assembly segment during the election campaign. Notable local BJP leaders, including panchayat representatives from various Zilla Parishad zones, participated in this agitation.

Surama  was elected from the Ranapur assembly seat in 2004 as the BJP nominee. She was later inducted as a Minister in the Naveen Patnaik cabinet when the BJP-BJD alliance government ran in Odisha. Despite losing elections consecutively two times ( 2009 and 2014) from BJP, she contested again in 2019 but lost by a narrow margin to BJD’s Satyanarayan Pradhan.
