After Balasore outrage, Another shock as teacher in Jharsuguda arrested for misconduct

Jharsuguda, July 15: While the entire state reels from the tragic death of a girl student from Balasore's Fakir Mohan (FM) College, a separate incident of alleged sexual misconduct by a teacher has emerged from Jharsuguda district, further intensifying public outrage.

The accused, identified as Trailokyanath Mahapatra, a teacher in the Laikera area of Jharsuguda, was arrested on Monday following allegations of inappropriate behavior towards female students. According to the police, Mahapatra allegedly called girl students close to him and engaged in objectionable conduct.

The matter first came to light when two students informed their families, who subsequently reported the incident to the Block Education Officer (BEO). The BEO had recommended the teacher's transfer on deputation. However, after the students’ families lodged a formal complaint at Laikera police station, a case was registered and Mahapatra was taken into custody as the investigation began.

This development comes in the backdrop of statewide protests and political unrest following the attempted self-immolation of a girl student from Balasore FM College, which has drawn widespread condemnation. The incident has rapidly escalated, sparking political reactions not just in Odisha but also in the national capital.

Both BJD and Congress have intensified their protests in Balasore, staging demonstrations, raising slogans, and laying siege to FM College. The opposition parties are demanding the resignation of the Higher Education Minister, holding the government accountable for the deteriorating safety and dignity of students.

The Congress party also held a press conference in Delhi, signaling that the issue has now gained national attention.
