Affordable guest house planned in Bhubaneswar for common people

Bhubaneswar, April 28: In a major relief for common citizens, the Odisha government is planning to build a large guest house in Unit-II area of the capital, offering accommodation at just ₹100 per night. The initiative, conceptualized by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, aims to benefit people from remote districts who visit the city for medical, official, or personal work.

Every day, hundreds of people arriving in Bhubaneswar struggle to find affordable lodging, with even budget hotels charging around ₹500. Many are forced to spend nights at railway stations or bus stands. Addressing this issue, the government has decided to construct a dormitory-style guest house with a capacity to accommodate around 1,500 people daily.

The project will come up under the Capital Redevelopment plan in Unit-II, where old government quarters are being cleared. In the first phase, 224 vacant quarters are set to be demolished, while another 180 will be taken down in the second phase.

However, the demolition process has hit a hurdle as no bidders have come forward for the tender, which requires contractors to pay ₹1.35 crore in exchange for salvaged materials. Officials say the tender conditions may be revised soon to speed up the project.
