The action followed a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who questioned the actor’s participation in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on October 10. A Mumbai Police official confirmed that a notice had been served on Khan, the nephew of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, who reportedly lives in Mumbai’s Khar area. Somaiya had urged the police to verify Khan’s citizenship and examine whether he could participate in a political demonstration as a foreign national.

During the protest, Imran Khan said he had joined as a citizen concerned about restrictions on freedom of movement and the suppression of people’s voices. The actor, his girlfriend Lekha Washington, his mother Nusrat and his niece Zayn (Marie) were reportedly detained along with around 400 others during the demonstration. The protesters were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The FRRO operates under the Bureau of Immigration, Ministry of Home Affairs, and oversees matters relating to foreign nationals’ registration, stay and departure.
