Active Covid-19 cases in India reaches 2,710 with seven deaths

New Delhi, May 31: Amid a steady uptick, the active Covid-19 cases in India reached 2,710 with 1,170 patients having recovered and been discharged and seven deaths reported across the country.

The Union Health Ministry confirmed the numbers adding that co-morbidities played a significant role in most cases, according to state-wise data.

According to the Health Ministry, a 60-year-old woman in Delhi died due to acute intestinal obstruction following a laparotomy, with Covid-19 being an incidental finding.

Meanwhile, Gujarat reported one death, but further details are still awaited.

Karnataka reported one death of a 70-year-old man who passed away due to acute heart and breathing failure, brain problems with seizures, severe anemia, low platelet count, and other health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. His Covid-19 status is still pending an RT-PCR test for confirmation, according to the statement.

Maharashtra also reported two deaths: a 67-year-old man who had severe breathing problems, left lung pneumonia, tested positive for Covid-19, and had other health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, and a stroke; and a 21-year-old man who died from diabetic complications and a lung infection, with one death confirmed after review.

Earlier, Union Minister of State for Health and AYUSH, Prataprao Jadhav, had said that the government is fully ready to handle any situation that comes up. Both the Central Health Department and the AYUSH Ministry are alert and carefully watching the situation in all states.

Infrastructures like oxygen plants and ICU beds built during earlier Covid-19 waves have been reviewed and have already started getting ready. Our health system is well-prepared to handle any Covid-related situation, he said.
