India Installs 4,557 EV Charging Stations on Highways

New Delhi, July 30: A total of 4,557 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations have been installed across 1,46,342 kilometers of National Highways, state highways, and expressways in India, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Among the states, Uttar Pradesh tops the list with 507 public EV charging stations, followed by Karnataka (489), Maharashtra (459), Tamil Nadu (456), and Rajasthan (424), Gadkari stated in a written response.

The information, based on data from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), highlights the growing infrastructure to support the country’s shift to electric mobility. However, the minister clarified that there is currently no scheme offering direct incentives to Charging Point Operators (CPOs).

In addition to highway infrastructure, 4,625 EV charging stations are operational in Tier-2 cities across India as of April 1, 2025.

To accelerate this momentum, the government has rolled out the PM E-Drive scheme with a financial outlay of ₹2,000 crore. This initiative aims to support the installation of approximately 72,000 public charging stations. These will be strategically set up along 50 National Highway corridors and in high-traffic zones such as metro cities, toll plazas, railway stations, airports, fuel stations, and state highways.

Launched in October 2024, the PM E-Drive scheme is part of a broader push to encourage EV adoption through both demand incentives and infrastructure expansion. The government has earmarked ₹10,900 crore under the scheme for subsidies on electric vehicles.

Additionally, under the FAME-II Scheme, a budget of ₹873.50 crore has been allocated for the installation of 8,932 EV public charging stations by oil marketing companies—Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL).

Further expanding the EV ecosystem, the government this month announced a new incentive program for electric trucks (e-trucks) under PM E-Drive. Each e-truck will be eligible for a maximum incentive of ₹9.6 lakh, marking a significant step towards electrifying commercial transport in India.
