The Balangir Marathon Association will offer 21km, 10km, and 5km categories.

Fitness enthusiasts and professional runners from across India have a new major event to target for 2026. The city of Balangir in Odisha is set to enter the national running circuit by hosting a significant National-Level Half Marathon on February 1, 2026. This ambitious initiative is being spearheaded by the Balangir Marathon Association (BMA).

The BMA formally unveiled the event at an inaugural ceremony on October 31, which was attended by prominent local stakeholders. The launch signified strong collaboration between the organizers and the local administration, with key district officials present to lend their support. Attendees included Assistant Collector Shri Ram Narayan Mishra and SDPO Shri Saroj Upadhyaya. The presence of other community figures, such as Treasury officer Bhimsen Bag and District Football Coach Shri Parasara Bag, further highlighted the event's broad local backing.

The marathon is designed to be an inclusive event, catering to a wide spectrum of participants. Runners can choose from three distinct categories. The flagship race will be the 21km half marathon, designed to attract serious long-distance competitors. Additionally, a 10km run and a 5km run will be offered, providing accessible options for intermediate participants, families, and those new to running.

Organizers stated that the marathon aims to be more than just a sporting competition. The BMA, a non-profit organization, intends for the event to become a platform for promoting health and wellness throughout the district. They also emphasized the potential for tourism. The race routes will reportedly be designed to showcase the cultural heritage and scenic landscapes of the Balangir region to a national audience.

The association anticipates drawing a national field of competitors, with cash prizes and medals planned for top finishers in all categories. This marathon represents a core part of the BMA's mission to foster community spirit and inspire healthier lifestyles through sports. Registration details are expected to be announced shortly, with organizers planning to offer early bird discounts.
