
Bhubaneswar, Oct 9: A two-day National Lab to Land Workshop on Climate, Environment and Sustainable Society (NLLW-CESS) is being organised at the Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University (SOA) on October 27 and 28 next with the objective of bringing together different stakeholders from diverse segments for interaction and to explore the way forward to save the environment.
The event is being organised by the Science for Common People Society (SCOPES) in collaboration with SOA, Bhubaneswar Chapter of Indian Meteorological Society, SNM Group, Government and corporate organisations, Prof. Uma Charan Mohanty, Distinguished Professor at SOA and President of SCOPES, said.
“This is an attempt to bring together academicians, scientists, experts, administrators and corporate managers from across the country to discuss the emerging issues but special focus is being given on participation of media persons and students from schools, colleges and universities in Odisha to involve them in this vital area,” Prof. Mohanty said.
The sub-themes for the event will include weather extremes including lightning and thunder storm, tropical cyclones, floods and urban flood and environmental issues comprising urban air and water pollution, deforestation, water and energy crisis. The other topics will include human health and climate including heat stress and vector borne diseases and sustainable strategies comprising green technology, green building, water and energy conservation, renewable energy and waste to wealth, he said.
The first day will have invited talks on climate, climate change and extreme events, health and environment and natural resources and pollution. A lecture in memory of late Prof. Manas Ranjan Das on ‘Sustainable Strategies in Water Resource Management’ will also be delivered on the opening day.
A students’ event will be held in the form of science projects and poster presentation in which students studying in Classes 8 to 12 (Junior Group) will take part. Students studying at the under graduate and post graduate level (Senior Group) will also participate in the program. This is intended to provide a platform for the students to showcase their original thoughts, creativity, talent and skill for building a sustainable community. The last date for submission of manuscript and posters online is October 15.
This students’ event is facilitated in the schools of Odisha by Centre for Environmental Studies, Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Government of Odisha. The details of this program are available in the SCOPES website www.scopes.org.in.
