New Delhi, December 3: Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw has warned that fake news poses a significant threat to democracy and called for the establishment of a robust legal framework to combat AI-generated deepfakes in India.

In a speech to the Lok Sabha, Vaishnaw emphasized the gravity of the situation surrounding fake news and social media. He stated, “Fake news is a serious threat to India's democracy,” stressing the need for urgent and stringent action against misinformation and AI-powered deepfakes on social media platforms.

The Minister also shared that new regulations have been implemented to address these concerns, including a requirement for content takedown within thirty-six hours of notification. According to the law, intermediaries are obligated to remove or disable access to illegal content within 36 hours upon receiving "actual knowledge" of its existence.

In addition, a draft rule has been published to address AI-generated deepfakes, and consultations are currently ongoing regarding its implementation. The draft amendments propose various obligations for online platforms and content creators, including mandatory content labelling, user declarations, and platform verifications.

Vaishnaw acknowledged the complex issue of balancing freedom of speech with the protection of democratic values. He remarked, “The government is addressing these issues with sensitivity to ensure that democracy is safeguarded.”

Highlighting the success of the Digital India initiative under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Minister praised the transformative effects of technology, which has democratized access to information. He also noted that social media, while empowering citizens, requires vigilant regulation to maintain societal trust and strengthen democratic institutions.

The government, he concluded, remains committed to fortifying both technological advancements and the foundational trust of society.
