G. Udayagiri, Aug 19: A 12-hour bandh has been called today in Udayagiri and Kalinga areas, beginning from 6 am and will continue till 6pm. The bandh, supported by several organisations and residents from eight panchayats, has led to a complete shutdown of shops, markets and vehicular movement in the region.
The protest comes in the wake of recent incidents of elephant attacks that claimed the lives of three people. Villagers have also alleged that earlier, wild elephants had killed eight cows, besides destroying several houses, cattle sheds, and large patches of banana, jackfruit, and maize cultivation.
The bandh has been called to demand the immediate relocation of the elephants from the area as well as adequate compensation for the losses suffered by the affected families.
