Balangir, Sept 12: A 12-hour bandh was observed in Sindhekela under Bangomunda block today, demanding the declaration of the area as a Notified Area Council (NAC). The bandh, called by the Sindhekela Citizens’ Forum, began at 6 AM and continued till 6 PM, affecting normal life across the region.

Shops, markets, educational institutions, government and private offices remained closed as locals extended full support to the shutdown. Vehicular movement came to a complete halt, causing inconvenience to commuters. Protesters staged picketing at various locations to enforce the bandh, ensuring commercial establishments and public services remained shut.

The demand for NAC status for Sindhekela has been a longstanding issue. Ahead of the 2024 elections, the previous state government had announced NAC status for the area. However, following a change in regime, the new government reissued the list of NACs, notably excluding Sindhekela — triggering public outrage.

In response, the Citizens’ Forum organized the bandh, reiterating their demand for immediate inclusion of Sindhekela in the NAC list. The agitation remained largely peaceful, with police and administrative officials deployed across key areas to maintain law and order.

Local residents have warned that intensified protests will follow if their demands are not addressed promptly by the government.
