Guwahati, January 13: Assam is gearing up for Magh Bihu, the state’s major harvest festival that marks the end of the harvesting season in mid-January. Communities across the state are preparing for traditional feasts and celebrations.

On the eve of Magh Bihu, known as Uruka, Guwahati’s markets are buzzing with people buying fish, meat, pithas, different varieties of laru, fresh cream, curd, and golden honey. In many regions, locals have set up Bhelaghars and Mejismade of bamboo, leaves, and thatch for the Bhogali Bihu festivities.

Schools and institutions have also begun celebrations. Students and teachers of Assam Jatiya Bidyalay observed pre-Magh Bihu on Monday by performing traditional rituals, burning theMeji, and offering prayers to Agni, the God of Fire. School management committee secretary Dr. Narayan Sharma said the event helps students connect with Assamese culture, especially those who cannot travel home for the festival.

Purabi Dairy, Northeast India’s largest dairy cooperative, marked pre-Magh Bihu at its Panjabari plant, celebrating a year of growth and expanding its presence across Assam. Officials said milk production, procurement, and the number of Dairy Cooperative Societies have increased, strengthening the cooperative network and supporting more farmers across the state. (ANI)
