Bhubaneswar, March 13: As many as 1,763 Government school buildings in Odisha are in dilapidated condition, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond informed the State Assembly on Friday.

In a written reply to a question in the State Assembly, the Minister informed said that 94 such schools are there in Keonjhar district, which is the home district of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

The highest 175 such schools are there in Sambalpur district, followed by Mayurbhanj district where 122 schools are in bad condition.

While 107 such schools are there in Subarnapur district, Cuttack and Kalahandi district have 104 and 101 dilapidated schools, respectively. Ganjam district recorded 100 dilapidated schools.

Similarly, Balasore district recorded 95 dilapidated schools followed by Keonjhar at 94 schools and Kendrapara at 90 schools, respectively.

In another reply, Minister Gond said that physical education will be introduced as a core subject for Class III to VIII students. Aligned with NEP 2020, this initiative aims for holistic development, integrating physical fitness with academic learning to improve student discipline and health, said Gond.

NEP 2020 aims to make physical education a core part of the curriculum in order to support students' overall mental health, discipline, teamwork, and physical fitness. On a local and national level, it also creates structured sports programmes to encourage participation.
