Explosive Batting Duo Secures Crucial Opening Victory In Chennai

New Zealand launched their 2026 T20 World Cup campaign with a composed five-wicket victory over Afghanistan, successfully navigating a tricky chase at the Chepauk Stadium. despite an early collapse, the Black Caps relied on a match-winning partnership between Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips to secure two vital points in what is considered the tournament's "Group of Death."

Chasing a target of 183, New Zealand faced immediate pressure. Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman delivered a stunning second over, removing openers Finn Allen and Rachin Ravindra on consecutive deliveries. This double-blow left the Kiwis reeling and gave Afghanistan hope of an upset. However, Glenn Phillips survived the hat-trick ball and immediately shifted the momentum.

Phillips and Seifert launched a counter-attack that effectively decided the match. The turning point arrived when the duo targeted Afghanistan’s star spinner, Rashid Khan, smashing him for 14 runs in his very first over. This aggression unsettled the Afghan bowling attack, allowing New Zealand to control the required run rate. Seifert top-scored with a brilliant 65, while Phillips contributed a punchy 42 to guide the team home with nearly two overs to spare.

Earlier in the day, Afghanistan elected to bat first on a surface that offered significant bounce. Gulbadin Naib was the star for his side, blasting a quick-fire 63 off just 35 balls. His innings helped push the total to 182 for 6, a score that initially looked competitive on the Chennai track. However, the lack of support from other bowlers after Mujeeb’s opening spell meant the total was not enough to stop the determined New Zealand lineup.

This win places New Zealand in a strong position ahead of their upcoming fixtures against heavyweights like South Africa.
