Phillips and Seifert launched a counter-attack that effectively decided the match. Earlier in the day, Afghanistan elected to bat first on a surface that offered significant bounce. Gulbadin Naib was the star for his side, blasting a quick-fire 63 off just 35 balls. His innings helped push the total to 182 for 6, a score that initially looked competitive on the Chennai track. However, the lack of support from other bowlers after Mujeeb’s opening spell meant the total was not enough to stop the determined New Zealand lineup.
