Dense fog and cold wave grip several Odisha districts

The winter chill has officially tightened its grip over Odisha, with temperatures plummeting across the interior districts. According to the latest bulletin from the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, dated December 6, 2025, residents in several parts of the state should prepare for misty mornings and colder nights over the coming days.

Temperature Drop and Coldest Spots

While dry weather currently prevails across most districts, the mercury has taken a significant dip in the hill stations and industrial towns. G. Udayagiri emerged as the coldest spot in the state, recording a shivering minimum temperature of 5.6°C. In the plains, the steel city of Rourkela reported the lowest minimum temperature at 8.1°C.

In the twin cities, the winter impact is milder but noticeable. Bhubaneswar recorded a minimum temperature of 13.0°C, while Cuttack hovered slightly lower at 12.4°C.

Fog and Cold Wave Warnings

The IMD has issued specific warnings for the next 48 hours.

  • Day 1: An alert has been sounded for isolated dense fog and cold wave conditions in specific pockets of the state. Visibility has already dropped significantly in areas like Rourkela, Koraput, and Phulbani, where dense fog (50m to 200m visibility) was observed.
  • Day 2: The fog warning continues, with shallow to moderate fog very likely to occur in one or two places. The districts primarily affected include Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, Sonepur, and Bolangir.

Commuters in these districts are advised to drive with caution during early morning hours due to reduced visibility.

The Week Ahead

Despite the current chill, the Met Department suggests stability in the overall weather pattern. There is no large change expected in the minimum night temperature over the next 6 to 7 days. Following the fog warnings for the initial two days, the forecast for Day 3 through Day 7 remains clear with no specific weather warnings issued.

While the days remain relatively warm—with Malkangiri recording the highest maximum temperature of 30.9°C—the nights are expected to remain crisp and cold, signaling that winter is here to stay.
