Bhubaneswar, Oct 28: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has called an emergency meeting today to review the state's preparedness ahead of Cyclone Montha, which is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts of the state.

Speaking from Mumbai, where he was attending the India Maritime Week 2025, CM Majhi stated, "Cyclone Montha is likely to make landfall near Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. However, several districts in Odisha are expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall from October 28 to 30 due to the cyclone’s impact. I have called this emergency meeting to assess the situation. Earlier, the state government conducted two review meetings on the impending cyclone. Our priority is to ensure zero casualties."

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Cyclone Montha will move toward the Andhra Pradesh coast, making landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening or night of October 28. At landfall, the cyclone is expected to bring maximum sustained winds of 90–100 km/h, gusting up to 110 km/h.

The cyclone is anticipated to cause widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds across various regions of Odisha till October 30.

In response, the IMD has issued a Red Warning for several districts, including Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi, which are likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall between October 28 and 30.

An Orange Warning has been issued for other districts, including Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Nuapada, Bargarh, and Sambalpur, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected during the same period.

Additionally, a Yellow Warning has been issued for districts such as Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda, with moderate to heavy rainfall forecasted till October 30.

All relevant departments have been put on high alert, with instructions to ensure timely evacuations, maintain uninterrupted communication, and coordinate between district administrations and state-level control rooms to minimize the cyclone's impact and prevent loss of life.
