Mercury likely to dip significantly across districts next week

Residents across Odisha should keep their winter gear accessible as the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has predicted a return of the chill. While the current weather conditions remain dry across most districts, a significant shift in night temperatures is on the horizon.

Current Weather Extremes

According to the data released on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the state witnessed contrasting weather patterns. G. Udayagiri emerged as the coldest distinct location, recording a shivering 9.0°C in the hill station category. In the plains, Phulbani recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 12.0°C. Conversely, Jharsuguda recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state, reaching a sweltering 32.5°C, indicating a sharp gap between day and night conditions.

In the Twin Cities, Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum of 31.2°C and a minimum of 15.2°C, while Cuttack hovered around 28.8°C (Max) and 14.2°C (Min).

Upcoming Temperature Drop

The MeT office has analyzed that there will be no large change in the minimum temperature (night temperature) over the next three days. However, this stability is temporary. Residents can expect the mercury to fall by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius during the subsequent three to four days. This indicates that the second week of February might bring a fresh wave of cold to the state.

Fog Warning Issued

Commuters are advised to exercise caution during early morning hours. A "Yellow Warning" for shallow to moderate fog has been issued for the next five days (up to February 9).

  • Day 1 & 2: Fog is likely in isolated pockets of Mayurbhanj, Khordha, Cuttack, Puri, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Jagatsinghpur, Kalahandi, and Sundergarh.
  • Day 3 onwards: The fog cover is expected to extend to Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Ganjam, and Nayagarh.

Motorists traveling on highways connecting Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Puri should remain vigilant due to reduced visibility in the early hours.
