Kabul, Dec 10: An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan early Wednesday morning, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported. The tremor, which occurred at a depth of 150 km, was recorded at 00:30 IST on December 10, 2025. The earthquake's epicenter was located at latitude 36.39°N and longitude 70.88°E in Afghanistan.

This latest tremor follows a series of earthquakes in the region. On December 9, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck Afghanistan at a depth of 70 km, while another quake earlier the same day measured 4.5 in magnitude but was shallower at a depth of just 10 km. Shallow quakes like this one often cause stronger shaking and can lead to more significant damage.

Afghanistan is no stranger to seismic activity, particularly in the Hindu Kush region, which is known for its high earthquake frequency. On November 4, a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit northern Afghanistan, killing at least 27 people and injuring nearly 1,000 others. The tremor also caused significant damage, including to a historic mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif.

The country lies atop several active fault lines at the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it highly prone to earthquakes. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has noted that Afghanistan remains especially vulnerable to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides, further exacerbating the challenges faced by communities already affected by years of conflict and limited development.
