Bhubaneswar, 27/12: The Institute of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (IVSAH), faculty of veterinary sciences of SOA Deemed to be University (SOA) here, has launched a Spa and Grooming Center for pet dogs and cats for proper management and care of such animals.

Highly skilled and trained professional groomers, working under the direct supervision of expert vets, will be available at the center, Prof. Sushanta Kumar Das, Dean IVSAH, said.

“Animals and birds are created beings who don’t have the capability to express themselves. And when they suffer, it is the vets who have to understand their problem and pain,” Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda, Vice-Chancellor of SOA, said.

The new center will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of such creatures, he said.

The unique features of the center are its air-conditioned units equipped with all modern amenities, Prof. Das said.

Shedding of hairs, secretion of oil/ear wax and growth of hair as well as nails are natural phenomena and create an unhealthy situation if not addressed appropriately. Further, India’s tropical climate with its continuous changes favoured multiplication of ectoparasites like ticks, lice and fleas which spread from one region to another and could affect healthy individuals.

These parasites suck blood, damage body coat, induce allergy and transmit fatal diseases like babesiosis, anaplasmosist and ehrlichiosis which often become fatal and lead to multi-organ dysfunction. This requires regular attention and care, Prof. Niranjan Sahu, Chief Medical Officer of IVSAH, said.

The services available in the center will include washing, hair cutting, nail cutting, ear cleaning, face styling, detangling and hair brushing for all types of breeds, viz. small, medium and large. The clients can request for different types of haircut for their hairy dog breed as per their choice and preference. Besides, there will be scope for exclusive add-on services to meet the need of the owners, Prof. Sahu said.

Proper management and care of the body coat, ears and nails by professionals lead to several positive health impacts including elimination of chances of developing matt through hair brushing. It also removes dead skin and dirt, improves blood circulation, reduces hair shedding and enhances cutaneous circulation, he said.

Grooming clears external parasites and prevents reinfestation. It also facilitates detection of skin disorders and underlying health issues such as lumps, warts, maggots etc.

Similarly, nail cutting/trimming reduces the risk of developing bad posture, arthritis and bone deformations while ear cleaning prevents chances of ear infections and aural hematoma. Regular visits to the center ensure the pet remains shiny and healthy, Prof. Sahu added.

The services will be available on all week days between 9 am and 5 pm. Pet owners can contact the center at the Institute of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry at Campus-4 of SOA University or call on mobile number 76089 21777, he informed.
