New Delhi, February 5: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has raised concerns about unregulated gyms and fitness centers across India, following a series of complaints regarding sexual exploitation and health risks. In response, the NHRC has issued notices to all state governments, including Odisha, the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, and relevant sports authorities, seeking detailed reports on the existing regulations governing gyms and fitness centers.

Priyank Kanoongo, Member of the NHRC, highlighted troubling cases of sexual exploitation in gyms. “There have been numerous reports of sexual exploitation of women, girls, and adolescent girls by trainers in gyms and fitness clubs across the country,” he said, pointing out the increased vulnerability of young women and minors in inadequately regulated fitness environments.

Kanoongo also raised alarms about serious health risks in the sector. He emphasized that the use of substandard food supplements and unmonitored physical practices could endanger lives. “Substandard food supplements and uncontrolled physical activities pose a significant threat to public health,” he added.

The NHRC is calling for comprehensive reports from the relevant authorities to determine whether existing regulatory measures are sufficient. “Notices have been issued to state governments, the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, and sports authorities to provide information on the rules governing the establishment and operation of gyms and fitness centers, so that steps can be taken to curb unethical practices in this sector,” said Kanoongo.

Earlier, on January 8, the Central Government appointed senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers Anand Swaroop and Anupama Nilekar Chandra to key roles in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and NHRC. These appointments were approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
