Angul, Dec 29: While an elephant’s suspicious death in the Dhandatopa forest Range under the Athamallik Forest Division in Angul district is yet to be probed another elephant carcass was spotted near the Pupunda village under the Angul Forest Division on Sunday.
Though the forest officials are yet to ascertain the reason behind the elephant’s death, locals suspect that it might have been killed in the trap or by firing shots.
According to reports, the locals of the Pokunda village reported the forest official after they spotted an elder elephant carcass in the village forest.
Acting on it, the range officials visited the spot, recovered the carcass and initiated an investigation into it.
The death of the pachyderm is yet to be ascertained. Deep wounds indicate something foul which will be revealed after the postmortem report, said the Angul DFO.
Worth mentioning, an elephant was reportedly killed in the Dhandatopa forest October 8 due to electrocution. However, neither the Athmallik DFO nor the Range officer has yet revealed anything on what led to the pachyderm’s death. Another elephant was found dead in the Athmallk division on October 13.
