Chennai, July 26: On the World Mangrove Day 2025, the Tamil Nadu government working out on the theme, “Protecting Wetlands for Our Future”, has built strong bio-shields against coastal erosion.
With 2,436 hectares of new plantations, 1,207 hectares of degraded mangroves restored, and 2 lakh seedlings planted in Chennai alone, Tamil Nadu is building strong bio-shields against coastal erosion, empowering 34 Village Mangrove Councils, ensuring community-led conservation.
This year we will plant more than 6 lakh Mangrove seedlings Witnessing our mangrove revolution take formidable shape building resilience for Tamil Nadu’s beautiful coastline gives us great satisfaction.On World Mangrove Day 2025 let us celebrate these climate super heroes that store 3,754 tons of carbon per ha, cut wave heights by 99% creating a bio shield and shelter 1,500+ species.
The Forest & Environment Department, Government of Tamil Nadu planted at least 2,436 ha of new mangroves and restored 1,207 ha. of the existing mangrove forest this year.
“With strong community leadership we pledge to protect, preserve, and propagate these green guardians”, said the ACS & head of Forest & Environment Department, government of Tamil Nadu Supriya Sahu.
Taking to twitter Sahu said, “On the eve of World Mangrove Day 2025, themed “Protecting Wetlands for Our Future”, we have launched a major mangrove plantation drive inaugurated by Forest Minister Thangam Thenarasu.”
