Sundargarh, Mar 9: In another incident of human-animal conflict, a woman was trampled to death by a jumbo at Ushumandi village under Koida range in Odisha’s Sundargarh district.
The deceased has been identified as Itawari Bhadra.
According to the information, late on Saturday night, a herd of elephant entered into the village. Bhadra, who was fast asleep at her home woke up to the sounds of elephants and came out of the house. However, while running for life, she was chased by a wild elephant and trampled to death.
Being informed, forest officials seized the body and sent it for post-mortem.
In a recent tragic incident on February 11th, a 72-year-old elderly man met his demise at Khaerpada village, situated within the Sambalpur Sadar Forest Range. According to accounts, the victim was asleep within his home when a marauding wild elephant forcefully breached the wall, ruthlessly trampling him to death on the spot.
Between 2013 and 2023, official sources reported a staggering toll of 996 human lives lost to elephant trampling in the state, while 794 elephants succumbed to the ongoing conflicts with humans. In the period of 2022-2023 alone, a record-breaking 150 individuals fell victim to these tragic encounters, marking the highest death toll in the decade.
