New Delhi, Oct 14: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has rolled out an innovative cleanliness drive encouraging commuters to report dirty toilets at toll plazas. Under this initiative, users who report unclean facilities will receive a Rs 1,000 reward credited to their FASTag account. The scheme will remain active across all National Highways in India until 31st October 2025.

To take part, commuters must use the latest version of the ‘Rajmargyatra’ mobile app. Participants are required to upload clear, geo-tagged, and time-stamped photographs of unhygienic toilets at NHAI-managed toll plazas. Along with the image, users must provide their name, location, Vehicle Registration Number (VRN), and mobile number through the app.

How to Earn Rs 1,000 via FASTag

Each VRN that reports a dirty toilet will receive a Rs 1,000 FASTag recharge. However, the reward is non-transferable and cannot be converted into cash. The initiative applies strictly to toilets that are constructed or maintained by NHAI, excluding those located at fuel stations or dhabas.

To ensure fairness, NHAI has implemented clear rules — each VRN can claim only one reward throughout the scheme’s duration, and each toilet facility is eligible for only one reward per day. If multiple reports are submitted for the same location on a single day, only the first valid entry will be considered.

Fair Verification with AI and Manual Review

The NHAI has incorporated AI-assisted verification to validate image authenticity. Entries will be screened for originality, and manipulated or duplicate images will be rejected. In cases of doubt, the system will trigger a manual verification process to ensure accuracy and fairness before rewarding users.

Promoting Accountability and Cleanliness

This initiative aims to foster public participation while ensuring accountability and hygiene at highway facilities. By involving citizens directly, NHAI seeks to elevate the standards of cleanliness at toll plazas nationwide.

The system benefits both commuters and authorities — highway users are rewarded for promoting sanitation, while NHAI gains real-time insights into poorly maintained facilities, enabling faster corrective action.

With the Rajmargyatra app, travellers can now play an active role in maintaining hygiene standards on national highways and get rewarded in the process. The initiative represents a forward-thinking blend of technology, citizen engagement, and accountability transforming India’s highways into cleaner and more commuter-friendly routes.
