PCB risks losing PSL foreign players over boycott threat

Tensions between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have reached a boiling point regarding the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. Reports suggest that the global cricket body is displeased with recent remarks made by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, specifically his vocal support for Bangladesh.

Sources indicate that the ICC is prepared to take drastic measures if Pakistan decides to boycott the global tournament. If the PCB chooses to withdraw, the consequences could be catastrophic for Pakistan cricket. The potential sanctions reportedly include a complete suspension of all bilateral series with international teams and the exclusion of Pakistan from the prestigious Asia Cup.

Perhaps the most damaging blow would be to the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The ICC could refuse to issue No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to foreign players, effectively barring international talent from participating in the league. This move would severely impact the commercial viability and popularity of the PSL.

The conflict began after Naqvi accused the ICC of "double standards" regarding the treatment of Bangladesh. He argued that Bangladesh, a full member nation, was being treated unfairly compared to India and Pakistan. Naqvi has publicly urged the ICC to adopt a hybrid model for Bangladesh, similar to the arrangement that allows Pakistan to play its matches in Colombo.

"One country cannot dictate terms to another," Naqvi stated, emphasizing that rules applied to major nations should also extend to Bangladesh.

Despite the heated rhetoric, the final decision on Pakistan’s participation does not rest solely with the cricket board. Naqvi confirmed that the matter will be decided at the highest level of government. The PCB is currently waiting for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to return from his trips abroad to make a final call on whether the team will travel for the T20 World Cup 2026.

For Odisha cricket fans following this geopolitical drama, the situation remains fluid. If Pakistan pulls out, the structure of the tournament could change significantly, impacting the schedule and excitement for viewers worldwide.
