Aviation veteran William Walsh replaces Pieter Elbers at IndiGo.

InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, the parent company of India’s largest carrier IndiGo, has named former British Airways chief William Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer. Walsh, who currently leads the International Air Transport Association (IATA), will officially take the reins by August 3, 2026. This high-profile appointment follows the abrupt departure of former CEO Pieter Elbers just weeks ago.

Walsh brings a decorated resume to the Indian budget carrier, having previously steered Aer Lingus, British Airways, and International Airlines Group (IAG). His arrival comes as the domestic market faces rising fuel costs and fierce competition. By securing a leader who managed IATA through the post-pandemic recovery, IndiGo signals its intent to dominate international routes beyond its current short-haul network.

Managing Director Rahul Bhatia emphasized that Walsh possesses the operational expertise required for the airline's next phase of expansion. IndiGo currently holds over 60% of the Indian domestic market share, and Walsh is tasked with maintaining this lead while enhancing customer experience and network reach.

Historically, IndiGo has favoured international leaders to maintain its global standards, a strategy that helped it survive the collapse of rivals like Jet Airways and Go First. Walsh's deep understanding of regulatory frameworks and fleet management will be crucial as the airline awaits delivery of hundreds of new aircraft. Walsh expressed confidence in the airline’s professional culture, and aims to build a sustainable value model for all stakeholders.
