Chandigarh, Aug 20: Will she join politics? Will she contest polls? After her recent Olympics Gold medal snub and her subsequent retirement from wrestling, will India's champion woman wrestler Vinesh Phogat take up politics? Will she be pitted against her cousin Babita Phogat in the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections?
There seems to be a lot of speculations in the social media and in a section of press as well, following her grand welcome in Delhi and felicitation by the Congress government in Haryana.
Vinesh was given a huge welcome in Delhi on her return from Paris Olympics 2024, though she was not awarded a medal for being overweight. Congress leader Deepender Hooda's presence during the warm welcome in Delhi triggered speculations of her joining politics and contesting polls.
She was honoured with a Rs four crore reward by the Congress government in Haryana, even if she was denied a medal in the Olympics following her disqualification for being 100 grams overweight before the Gold medal fight.
Earlier Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi too has been with her during the wrestlers' protest in Delhi. Priyanka too has extended her wholeheartedly support to Vinesh after medal snub in Paris Olympics.
Speculations are rife that she will contest against her cousin sister Babita Phogat in the upcoming Assembly elections in Haryana.
It can be recalled that the Election Commission of India on August 16 announced that Assembly polls will be held in a single phase in Haryana between September 18 and October 1. The counting of votes will be held on October 4.
In 2019, Vinesh's cousin sister, Commonwealth Games double Gold medallist and BJP candidate Babita Phogat lost badly in her political debut by losing from Haryana’s Dadri Assembly seat. She stood third behind the winner, an independent candidate, and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) candidate.
It is speculated that Vinesh will be pitted against her cousin sister Babita this time in the coming Assembly polls in Haryana.
With polls round the corner in her home state, will Vinesh join politics and fight polls in a Congress ticket in the upcoming Assembly elections in Haryana, seems to be a hot topic for her fans and netizens. But will that turn true? Well, we will have to wait and see.
