Bhubaneswar/Kolkata, October 15: The father of a medical student from Jaleswar, Odisha, who was allegedly gang-raped in Durgapur, West Bengal, has vowed never to return to the state, calling the assault on his daughter "unbearable." His statement follows the horrifying attack on his daughter, a second-year MBBS student, in early October 2025.
The incident, which occurred on the night of October 10, has shaken the victim's family and sparked outrage. The medical student was reportedly attacked near her private college campus while accompanied by a male friend. In his police complaint, the victim’s father accused the male friend of misleading his daughter, leading her into a dangerous situation.
Expressing his dismay, the father criticized the state government's handling of the case, as well as remarks made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Initially, he publicly condemned Banerjee’s comments about the safety of women, which suggested that "girls should protect themselves" and avoid being out late at night. The CM’s statement was widely denounced as victim-blaming. However, she later defended herself, claiming her words had been misinterpreted.
As the investigation continues, police have arrested six people, including the male friend, in connection with the crime. They have also recreated the crime scene as part of their efforts to piece together the details of the attack.
In a dramatic turn, on October 15, the victim’s father issued a public apology to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, calling her a "mother-like figure." He pleaded for her support in securing justice for his daughter and requested that the case be handed over to the CBI for further investigation. Despite his apology, his anger remains evident, and he stands firm in his decision to never return to Bengal.
