Bhubaneswar, Aug 12: Odisha’s vibrant art fraternity is mourning the loss of one of its finest creative minds. Renowned artist, editor and art critic Jagadish Chandra Kanungo passed away at the age of 86 at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy in contemporary and traditional art.

For decades, Kanungo stood at the forefront of Odisha’s artistic movement, shaping the state’s contemporary painting tradition while passionately preserving classical art forms such as Pattachitra. His work bridged heritage and modern expression, inspiring generations of artists across Odisha.

Beyond his canvas, Kanungo made a lasting impact through art journalism and publishing. He edited several prestigious art journals and commemorative publications of the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi, and gained wide recognition as the editor of the celebrated magazine Rangarekha, launched in 1986.

A familiar presence at exhibitions, workshops and seminars, Kanungo dedicated his life to promoting dialogue between traditional and contemporary art. His leadership as the former president of the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi further strengthened the state’s cultural institutions.

His immense contribution earned him several honours, including the Dharmapada Award and the Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman in 2021.

With his passing, Odisha loses not just an accomplished painter, but a visionary who transformed the way the state celebrated and documented its artistic heritage.
