“Who shoots at their own citizens?” Sonam Wangchuk’s wife questions police after activist’s arrest

Leh (Ladakh), September 30: Gitanjali J Angmo, wife of noted education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has strongly criticized the police and security forces after her husband was linked to the recent unrest in Leh. She alleged that authorities are fabricating narratives to avoid granting Ladakh inclusion under the Sixth Schedule and are attempting to make Wangchuk a scapegoat.

“We strongly condemn the DGP’s statements. Not only I, but the entire Ladakh community rejects such allegations,” Angmo told ANI.

Calling the situation “deeply unfortunate,” she questioned the security response. “Who gave the CRPF orders to open fire? Who shoots at their own people, their own citizens? Especially in a region that has never witnessed violent protests,” she asked.

Defending Wangchuk, Angmo stressed that he had no involvement in the violence. “What could Sonam Wangchuk have instigated? He was elsewhere, observing a hunger strike, unaware of these developments,” she clarified, accusing the police of pushing an “agenda” to suppress the Sixth Schedule demand.

She further criticized the imposition of curfew in Leh, arguing that it was unjustified. “The youth were protesting peacefully. It was only after the CRPF used tear gas that the situation escalated. To label it violent is misleading,” she said.

Tensions have gripped Leh since the September 24 clashes that left four people dead. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023, remain in place, barring gatherings of five or more people without prior approval. Security personnel continue to be deployed across the district, and 44 individuals have so far been arrested in connection with the violence.

The central demand of the Ladakhi people—to be brought under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution—remains at the heart of the ongoing unrest.
